International Researchers Visited Karlovy Vary

On Saturday, 17 October 2026, a group of international researchers and Ph.D. candidates  from UCT Prague set off on a day trip to Karlovy Vary, joined by colleagues from IOCB Prague and CZU Prague (Czech University of Life Sciences Prague).

We departed early in the morning by RegioJet bus to make the most of a packed programme. The day included a scenic walk along the famous mineral springs, a visit to the iconic Hot Spring (Vřídlo) and a guided tour of the historic Imperial Baths.

The visit to the Imperial Baths was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the programme, as can be seen from the photographs below. During the guided tour, our local guide's commentary was expertly translated into English by our excellent guide, Martin Bělohradský. Thanks to this, participants learned many fascinating facts about the lifestyle and spa traditions of the aristocracy and social elite of the 19th century, when the Czech lands were part of the Habsburg Monarchy.

After lunch, we took the funicular railway to the Diana Observation Tower and enjoyed a pleasant hike back down through the forest to the town centre.

In the late afternoon, we boarded the bus back to Prague, full of wonderful impressions and pleasantly tired after covering nearly 10 kilometres on foot.

The trip provided an excellent opportunity not only to discover one of the Czech Republic's most famous spa towns, but also to strengthen connections among members of the international research community from the participating institutions.
Special thanks go to Martin Bělohradský for his excellent guidance and interpretation throughout the day, and to EURAXESS Czech Republic for its financial support. The excursion was organised by Anna Mittnerová of the Welcome Office at UCT Prague.
